GEICO defensive driving discount

GEICO doesn’t sell a defensive driving course. What it offers is a discount, typically up to about 10% on applicable coverages, for completing a state-approved defensive driving or accident-prevention course. Who qualifies depends on your state: in most states GEICO limits it to drivers 50 or 55 and older, a handful of states extend it to every age, and a few don’t offer it at all. Here’s how to tell whether you qualify, which course counts, and how to claim it.

Quick answer

  • Discount: up to about 10% (some states higher) on liability, collision and/or PIP, usually for 3 years.
  • Age: most states 50+ or 55+; all ages in some states, including New York and New Jersey, where state law requires a discount for any driver who completes an approved course.
  • Course: any course your state approves for insurance discounts. GEICO doesn’t require a particular provider.
  • Must be voluntary: a course a court ordered, or one taken to dismiss a ticket, usually doesn’t qualify.
  • Check first: GEICO’s defensive driver discount page lists your state’s rules; or ask in the GEICO app or by phone before you enroll.

Who qualifies

Eligibility is set by GEICO’s underwriting company in each state, within that state’s insurance law. Published summaries don’t agree on the exact state count, so treat this as the pattern rather than a guarantee:

  • Mature-driver states (the majority): drivers 50+, or 55+ in some states, who complete an approved course. Many of these states have a law requiring insurers to offer a mature-driver discount; Florida, for example, requires it for principal operators 55 and older.
  • All-age states: in a smaller group, any licensed driver qualifies. New York’s Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) requires a 10% reduction on base liability and collision premiums for 3 years; New Jersey requires insurers to discount for an MVC-approved course.
  • Not offered: a few states have no GEICO defensive driver discount. Ask before paying for a course you’d take only for the discount.

Which course counts

GEICO accepts the course your state recognises for insurance purposes, from any approved provider. The certificate needs your name, the course, the provider and the completion date. In our states:

How to claim the GEICO discount

  1. Confirm eligibility. Check GEICO’s defensive driver discount page for your state, or ask in the app or by phone: Is it offered on my policy? Is there an age requirement? Which drivers must take the course? Which coverages does it apply to?
  2. Take a state-approved course voluntarily. Online is fine. If you’re also dealing with a ticket, ask whether a ticket-dismissal course counts; often it doesn’t.
  3. Upload the certificate through your GEICO online account or the app, or send it as GEICO directs. Get a confirmation.
  4. Look for it at renewal. The discount usually applies from the next renewal and lasts about 3 years.
  5. Diary a refresher before it lapses.

What it’s worth

Because the percentage applies to specific coverages rather than the whole bill, the real saving is usually smaller than the headline: on a $1,600 policy where those coverages are about $1,100, 10% is roughly $110 a year, $330 over three years, for a $20–$40 course and an evening. Still one of the better returns available, if you qualify.

Texas drivers

In Texas the qualifying course is the 6-hour TDLR-approved driving safety course ($28). Some GEICO companies in Texas limit the discount to drivers 50+. Texas law also bars insurers from raising your rate because you used the course to dismiss a ticket, though that course generally won’t earn the voluntary discount. Texas insurance discount guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEICO have its own defensive driving course?

No. GEICO accepts certificates from state-approved providers.

How much is the GEICO defensive driving discount?

Commonly up to about 10% on applicable coverages, for about 3 years. The exact amount and coverages vary by state.

Is the GEICO discount only for seniors?

In most states it’s for drivers 50 or 55 and older. Some states, including New York and New Jersey, extend it to all ages.

Can I use a ticket-dismissal course for the GEICO discount?

Usually not. GEICO’s discount is for courses taken voluntarily; a court-ordered or ticket-related course generally doesn’t qualify. Ask before relying on it.

Which GEICO-approved defensive driving course should I take?

Any course your state approves. GEICO doesn’t endorse one provider; pick on price, format and how fast you get the certificate.
