AAA’s defensive driving course isn’t one national product. It’s run by regional AAA clubs, so what you get (online or classroom, price, and what it does for your license) depends on your state. In some states it’s the official point-reduction course; in others it’s only good for an insurance discount; and in a few, like Texas, it can’t be used for a ticket at all. Here’s what AAA offers, what it costs, and when another course is the better buy.
Quick answer
- Online? Yes in most AAA clubs, alongside scheduled classroom sessions.
- Price: roughly $25–$45 depending on club and state, with a member discount of about $5; state fees (such as New York’s $8 DMV fee) are extra.
- Members only? No. Non-members can enroll at the higher price.
- What it does: depends on the state. NY: up to 4 points off and a 10% insurance discount. NJ: 2 points off and the mandated discount. TX: insurance discount only; it won’t dismiss a ticket.
- Seniors: AAA RoadWise is a separate mature-driver course aimed at insurance discounts for older drivers.

When AAA is the right choice
- You want a classroom. AAA is one of the few providers still running in-person sessions widely.
- You’re in New York or New Jersey and already a member. The member price is competitive and the course is approved for points and the discount.
- You’re 55+ and want a mature-driver course for an insurance discount. RoadWise is designed for that.
When another course is better
- Texas tickets: AAA’s course doesn’t qualify. Any TDLR-approved course does, from $28.
- Florida tickets: elect a 4-hour FLHSMV-approved BDI course.
- Price: outside NY, independent online providers are often cheaper for the same state approval (New Jersey courses start around $20).

AAA insurance discount
If AAA also insures your car, it generally honors any state-approved course for its defensive-driver discount, not just its own. The rules mirror other insurers: often age-limited outside mandate states, usually 3 years, voluntary courses only. See how insurer discounts work (GEICO’s rules are a useful comparison).
Frequently asked questions
How much is the AAA defensive driving course?
Roughly $25–$45 depending on your club and state, about $5 less for members, plus any state fee ($8 in New York).
How long is the AAA defensive driving course online?
It follows the state minimum: 6 hours in New York and New Jersey, 8 hours for Washington’s course, shorter for some mature-driver courses.
Can non-members take the AAA course?
Yes, at the non-member price.
Can I use the AAA course to dismiss a ticket?
Not in Texas. In New York and New Jersey it reduces points rather than dismissing tickets. Washington clubs offer a separate court-citation version some courts accept.
Is there a free AAA defensive driving course?
No. Some clubs offer free or discounted classes to members periodically, but approved courses carry a fee.
