The New York defensive driving course, officially the Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP), is a 6-hour DMV-approved course you can take online. Finishing it does two things: the DMV excludes up to 4 points from the count it uses for suspensions, and your insurer must cut the base rate of your liability and collision premiums 10% for three years. It costs about $24–$35 plus an $8 DMV fee. Here’s how it works and who should take it.
Quick answer
- Length: 6 hours (usually 8 chapters with short quizzes), online or classroom. Most online courses must be finished within 30 days of enrolling.
- Cost: about $24–$35 for the course, plus an $8 NY DMV processing fee.
- Points: up to 4 excluded from your suspension count; usable once every 18 months. The violations stay on your record.
- Insurance: 10% off liability and collision base rates for 3 years, required by law; renewable every 36 months. Send your certificate to your insurer within 90 days.
- Doesn’t: dismiss a ticket, avoid a mandatory suspension, or cancel a Driver Responsibility Assessment.
- Our pick: iDriveSafely, $24 with its current code + $8 DMV fee, same-day DMV reporting.

How the point reduction actually works
PIRP doesn’t erase anything. The violations stay on your driving record; what changes is the number the DMV uses to decide suspensions. Up to 4 points are left out of that calculation. Since February 16, 2026, a suspension review is triggered at 10 points within 24 months, so 4 points is often the difference between keeping and losing your license: two speeding tickets at 11–20 over (4 points each) plus a cell-phone ticket (5) is 13 points; PIRP brings that to 9. The full 2026 point schedule.
Point reduction only helps with points already on your record, so take the course after the conviction posts, not before. The 18-month clock for using PIRP again runs from your last completion.
The 10% insurance discount
New York Insurance Law requires insurers to reduce the base rate of liability and collision premiums (and, by many providers’ description, no-fault) by 10% for three years for a driver who completes an approved course. Send the certificate to your insurer within 90 days. Usually only one driver per vehicle, typically the principal operator, gets the reduction. On a $2,400 NY policy where the covered portions are $1,600, that’s about $160 a year, $480 over three years.
Step by step
- Pick a DMV-approved PIRP sponsor. Online courses from approved sponsors carry the same weight as classroom ones.
- Enroll and finish within 30 days. Six hours of timed chapters; you can log in and out.
- The school reports to DMV. Electronically; some report the same day if you finish by mid-afternoon.
- Send the certificate to your insurer within 90 days for the discount.
- Diary the dates: 18 months until you can use the point reduction again; 36 months until the discount needs renewing.
