The cheapest defensive driving course in Texas costs $25, and that’s not a sale price: it’s the minimum the state allows any approved provider to charge. Several providers sell at exactly $25. The real cost differences hide in certificate delivery fees, “processing” charges, and driving-record markups. Here’s how to pay $25 and not a dollar more.
Quick answer
- Floor price: $25 by law. Anyone charging less isn’t TDLR-approved.
- $25 courses with a free instant certificate: DefensiveDriving.com (text), Aceable, Comedy Defensive Driving, iDriveSafely, OnlineTxDefensiveDrivingCourse.com, SafeDriver.com.
- Cheapest all-in for a ticket: $25 course + $12 Type 3A record ordered yourself from DPS = $37, plus the court’s costs which no provider can change.
- Our pick at $25: DefensiveDriving.com, because mail and FedEx delivery are free too, so there’s no scenario where you pay more.
Where the hidden costs are
| Add-on | Typical charge | Do you need it? |
|---|---|---|
| Mailed certificate | $0–$10 | Only if your court insists on an original. Most accept the PDF. |
| Rush / overnight delivery | $15–$30 | Only if you left it to the last week. Free at DefensiveDriving.com. |
| “Processing” or “certificate” fee | $2–$10 | Never. Pick a provider that doesn’t charge one. |
| Type 3A driving record via provider | $15–$25 | Convenient, but DPS charges $12 online. Order it yourself. |
| Audio read-along, video upgrade | $5–$15 | Personal preference. The $25 text course is equally valid. |
The $37 route, step by step
- Get the court’s permission first (free; see how). Skipping this can cost you the whole $25.
- Buy a $25 text course and decline every add-on at checkout.
- Download the certificate PDF when you finish. Don’t pay for mailing unless the court told you it needs an original.
- Order the Type 3A record from DPS for $12, not from the provider.
- File both with the court by upload, email or mail, whichever the court allows, to avoid a trip.

Is a free Texas defensive driving course possible?
No. The Texas Education Code and TDLR rules fix the minimum course fee at $25, so a free course cannot be approved and its certificate is worthless to a court or insurer. Sites advertising “free defensive driving” are either selling a non-Texas course or charging the $25 at the certificate stage. The one legitimately free thing is the insurance discount itself: many insurers give it for a voluntarily completed $25 course, which pays for itself many times over. How the discount works.
Frequently asked questions
Why is every Texas course $25?
State law sets $25 as the minimum a provider may charge for an approved driving safety course. Competition pushes nearly everyone to that floor; premium formats cost more.
Is the $25 text course as good as the $35 video one?
For the court and your insurer they’re identical: same approval, same certificate. The difference is only how you spend the 6 hours.
Can I get the course cheaper with a coupon?
Not below $25. Coupons apply to video upgrades and add-ons.
