The Florida Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course is the 12-hour, FLHSMV-approved course you need to apply for a hardship license after a suspension or revocation, and that courts and FLHSMV order after certain violations. It’s not the 4-hour traffic-school course you elect after a ticket; that’s BDI. Online ADI courses cost about $59–$99, and you have 90 days from enrollment to finish. Here’s who needs it, how the hardship license works, and which course to take.

Quick answer

  • What it is: a 12-hour FLHSMV-approved course, online or classroom.
  • Who needs it: drivers applying for a hardship license after a points suspension or habitual traffic offender revocation, and anyone ordered to take it by a court or FLHSMV.
  • Cost: about $59–$99 online, depending on provider and whether state fees are included.
  • Deadline: complete within 90 days of enrolling, or the hardship privilege can be cancelled.
  • Hardship license: apply at an FLHSMV Bureau of Administrative Reviews office with your ADI enrollment certificate.

Who has to take ADI

  • Points suspension: 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18 or 24 in 36 (points system). To drive during the suspension on a hardship license you must enroll in ADI.
  • Habitual traffic offender (HTO): a 5-year revocation for three serious convictions (or fifteen moving-violation convictions) in five years. After the waiting period, a hardship license requires ADI.
  • Court order: judges can require ADI as part of a sentence for serious moving violations or after a crash.
  • FLHSMV order: certain license actions, and some repeat-violation situations, come with an ADI requirement.

How to get a hardship license with ADI

  1. Read your suspension or revocation notice. It says whether you’re eligible for a hardship license and any waiting period.
  2. Enroll in an FLHSMV-approved 12-hour ADI course. Online is accepted. The provider issues an enrollment certificate immediately.
  3. Apply at an FLHSMV Bureau of Administrative Reviews (BAR) office. Bring the ADI enrollment certificate, ID, and the application fee. A hearing officer decides whether to grant the hardship license and its limits (commonly driving for work, or for business purposes such as work, school, medical and church).
  4. Finish the course within 90 days of enrolling. If you don’t, the hardship privilege can be cancelled.
  5. Follow the restrictions until the suspension ends; driving outside them is driving on a suspended license.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the Florida 12-hour ADI course online?

Yes, from FLHSMV-approved online providers.

How long do I have to finish ADI?

90 days from enrollment, per providers and FLHSMV practice. Missing it can cancel your hardship license.

Does ADI remove points from my Florida license?

No. It’s a condition for a hardship license or reinstatement, not a point-reduction course.

Do I need ADI for a regular ticket?

No. For a ticket you elect the 4-hour BDI course within 30 days.

What’s on the flhsmv.gov ADI page?

FLHSMV’s driver improvement pages list approved ADI providers and the hardship license process. Use them to confirm a provider before you pay.
